Michael Gadiel is currently the Executive Director of Economic Strategy in NSW Treasury. He leads five teams including the Centre for Evidence and Evaluation, Productivity Reform, Regulatory Improvement, Microeconomic Policy and Aboriginal Economic Wellbeing. He has worked in, and led, a range of teams across treasury, including justice, fiscal strategy, credit ratings, wages policy, budget strategy, modelling and economic forecasting. He led the teams delivering the 2016 and 2011 NSW Intergenerational Reports.
Michael joined the NSW Treasury in 2007 having formerly worked as a Senior Policy Advisor in the Office of the Treasurer (Michael Costa), the Office of the Premier (Bob Carr) and the Labor Council of NSW where he was the VET policy lead.
Michael is committed to reform and has always strived to improve the use data and evidence to drive better policy outcomes and apply economic analysis and modelling to uncover insights for to policymakers.
Michael is a graduate of the Public Service Commission Leadership Academy (2019). He holds a Batchelor’s Degree in Science majoring in mathematics and physics, and a master’s degree in economics with First Class Honours from the University of Sydney. He won the 2008 Econometric Modelling Prize.
