The Economic Society of Australia (NSW Branch) is excited to invite you to an event jointly hosted by ESA, Google and UNSW.

Dr. Varian, Google’s Chief Economist, will be talking about how Google’s data and tools can be used for economic analysis. This will include what it can tell us about the current events in the global economy and how digital can play a role in the economy going forward.

There will be time for questions and following the event there will be time for mingling amongst ESA, Google and UNSW participates and some refreshments.

Time: 12.15pm for 12.30pm until 2.00pm.  Presentation, followed by informal refreshments

Location: Google Australia - 1 Darling Road, Pyrmont, NSW 2009

Cost: Free for members / $10 for non-members (join or renew now)

Requirements: visitors to the office will be required to be fully vaccinated (second dose must have been administered more than 14 days before arrival) and will need to check-in at reception.

This event is being jointly hosted by Economic Society of Australia (NSW Branch), Google Australia and the University of NSW Business School. 


Hal R. Varian is the Chief Economist at Google where he has worked on many aspects of the company, including auction design, econometrics and public policy. He is also an emeritus professor at the University of California, Berkeley in three departments: business, economics, and information management.

He received his SB degree from MIT in 1969 and his MA in mathematics and Ph.D. in economics from UC Berkeley in 1973. He has taught at MIT, Stanford, Oxford, Michigan and other universities around the world. Dr Varian is a fellow of the Guggenheim Foundation, the Econometric Society, and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and holds honorary doctorates from the University of Oulu and the University of Karlsruhe. He is the author of two major economics textbooks and a co-author of a bestselling book on business strategy, Information Rules, and wrote a monthly column for the New York Times from 2000 to 2007.
