2024 End-of-Year Meeting and Topic Discussion -
The Works of the 2024 Nobel Prize Winners, Daron Acemoglu, Simon Johnson and James Robinson
ESA NSW Branch is delighted to have Professors Hugh Harley (USyd) and David Orsmond (McQ) talk to us about the fascinating and important works of the 2024 Nobel Prize Winners.
The key reference is Acemoglu and Robinson, Why Nations Fail, The Origins of Power, Prosperity and Poverty, 2012, with the critical focus on the role of political institutions in economic prosperity (and failure). The most recent work is Acemoglu and Johnson, 2023, Power and Progress, with a stronger focus on technology and prosperity.
Following their presentations, Dr Aruna Sathanapally (CEO of Grattan Institute) will kick off the responses from the floor and the meeting will continue with views and questions from the audience. Dr Peter Abelson (ESA NSW President) will moderate discussions and give some relevant anecdotes from some of the 10 “developing” countries that he has worked in.
This event is in-person only.
We hope you will be able to join us at this entertaining End-Of-Year event which will be followed by an opportunity for members to network and catch-up over light refreshments.
