DESCRIPTION:Family and work: the role of paid parental leave
In this presentation\, four aspects of paid parental leave are explored\, including the impacts of: introducing paid parental leave\, changing the duration of existing paid parental leave\, changing the generosity of existing paid parental leave payments\, and paid paternity leave. Based on the international and Australian literature on paid parental leave\, it focusses on the impact paid parental leave has on the labour force participation of mothers in developed countries. It includes descriptive information on the recent and current situation in Australia\, and interprets the implications of previous studies in the context of Australia.

Guyonne Kalb is a Professorial Research Fellow and Director of the Labour Economics and Social Policy Program in the Melbourne Institute: Applied Economic &amp\; Social Research at the University of Melbourne. Her research interests are mainly in the field of applied micro-economics and include labour supply issues\, in particular female labour supply\; the interaction of labour supply\, social policy and taxation\; labour supply and childcare\; and the impact of childcare/parental activities on child development and health. She publishes widely\, for example inJournal of Human Resources\, Journal of Health Economics\, Economics of Education Review\, Fiscal Studies and Economic Record.
