EES Lunch with The Hon. Wayne Swan
The Reserve Bank hosted the Society's Emerging Economist’s Series lunch on 2 November, with Wayne Swan, former Deputy Prime Minister of Australia and Deputy Leader of the Labor Party from 2010 to 2013, and the Treasurer of Australia from 2007 to 2013 and current National President of the Australian Labor party. He shared his experiences from his time growing up in regional QLD, his time at the university of Queensland, being first elected and then his career in Australian Politics including his experiences as Treasurer during the Global Financial Crisis. Wayne Swan continues to be a passionate advocate for climate and energy policy which he spoke about at length, including from the perspective of his current position as Cbus Super Chair and as Director of Diatreme and Stanwell Corporation - one of Australia’s largest coal fired power station. There was great engagement from the audience on his career, the current economic and energy challenges and the role of economists in public policy.
