With the release of ChatGPT—a ground-breaking AI-powered chatbot—automation has progressed from dull and repetitive tasks to complex and creative ones. The world is again being amazed by the speed at which artificial intelligence (AI) is developing.

But with amazement comes anxiety. Will this technology make our lives better? Or will the winners take all, as jobs and livelihoods are threatened?

Late last year, just a week before GhatGPT arrived, the NSW Productivity Commission and the NSW Innovation and Productivity Council released a new report exploring these questions: Adaptive NSW: how embracing tech could recharge our prosperity.

In this session, Matt Costa of the NSW Productivity Commission presents new economic scenario modelling, powered by Faethm AI, showing how AI could impact NSW’s economy, workforce, and society. Drawing on the history of automation, he outlines the risks and opportunities of AI, busts some myths, and identifies six principles for navigating the road ahead.

About the Speaker

Dr Matt Costa is a Principal Economist in NSW Treasury’s Productivity Reform Branch, which supports the work of the NSW Productivity Commissioner. He works on issues including skills, education and the future of work. Matt has been an advisor in the Economic Division of the Department of Prime Minister and Cabinet and in the COAG Reform Council. He holds a PhD in Political Economy from the University of Sydney, where he lectured and is currently an Honorary Associate.
