Unpacking the Economic Impacts of Climate Change
In this seminar, three leading economists - Professor Tom Kompas from the University of Melbourne, Emma Richardson from the Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water and Nicki Hutley, Independent Economist discuss the economic impacts of climate change, what it looks like in Australia and how it affects regions, industries and policies. The session covered issues such as economic damages, what the economic modelling tells us in Australia and abroad, and implications for policymakers and businesses.

About the Speakers
Professor Tom Kompas, University of Melbourne
Tom Kompas is a Professor of Environmental Economics and Biosecurity in the School of Biosciences and the School of Ecosystem and Forest Sciences at the University of Melbourne. He is also a Chief Investigator in the Centre of Excellence for Biosecurity Risk Analysis (CEBRA) and Research Group Director of the Centre for Environmental and Economic Research (CEER) at the University of Melbourne. Tom is a Fellow of the Academy of Social Sciences Australia, a recipient of the Eureka Prize in Science and a Distinguished Fellow of the Australasian Agricultural and Resource Economics Society. He was Director of the Crawford School of Public Policy at the ANU from 2009 to 2015.
Emma Richardson, Climate and Industry Modelling, Commonwealth Treasury
Emma is an Economist with over 10 years of experience in decarbonisation strategy and public policy advice specialising in energy and climate. Her previous work has included public policy design for the EV transition, energy customer behaviour insights, long term labour market analysis and energy market design. She currently leads a team in the Treasury providing regional economic analysis of climate change impacts. Previously, she led Climate Change Policy as a Director in the ACT Government and provided analysis on energy markets and economic policy with Deloitte Access Economics. She has a Masters of Economics from Monash University and is a mentor to early career economists.
Nicki Hutley, Independent Economist and Councillor, Climate Council
Nicki Hutley is a highly experienced economist, with experience in financial and investment markets as well as economic consulting. Nicki has applied economic theory to a wide range of policy portfolios, but her passion lies in understanding and responding to the challenges of climate change (as a Councilor on the Climate Council) and supporting excellence in social impact programs (as Economics Consultant at Social Outcomes). Nicki believes the ESA plays an important role in Australian economic policy debates and enjoys being a part of the ESA Council and helping to engage a broad membership. Her personal mission is to bring an understanding of economics to a much wider part of the Australian electorate. Nicki is also an avid reader, cat lover, nature photographer and traveller.
